LESSON 3 Fortune form Abroad

Hang Xingyun lived in a small, old apartment in a little city in the north of China.

He didn't make much money, less than a thousand yuan each month, and his wife lost her job a year ago.

They've been married for ten years and have a daughter who's eight years old.

Their lives changed completely when they got a letter from the USA.

Hang was told he needed to go to San Francisco to get a big inheritance from his older uncle who was thought to have died in the Korean War in the early 1950s.

The story was that his uncle got captured during the war.

After the war, instead of going back to China, like most others, he secretly went to Taiwan.

He stayed there for a while and then somehow moved to New York and later to San Francisco, where he worked hard and started his own business.

He got married once but got divorced and didn't have any kids.

Before he died from cancer, he became really rich.

Hang Xingyun's parents passed away a few years ago.

Hang's family is getting ready to move to the USA.

They're going to start new lives on the other side of the Pacific Ocean.
