Lesson 17 The Price of Life

Tragedies often bring deep pain and loss.

For some families, the sorrow lasts a lifetime.

Certain tragedies have made such an impact that they're remembered in history, causing readers to feel deep sorrow, yet sometimes these events lead to positive changes for society or those affected.

Sadly, these benefits usually come at the cost of lives.

For example, the deaths of Romeo and Juliet eventually led to peace between their feuding families.

Another example is the Titanic, which sank on its maiden voyage in the North Atlantic, taking 1,500 lives with it.

This disaster led to stricter safety measures on ships, helping to save lives in future shipwrecks.

A young artist, coming home late from an internet café, was stopped by police for not having his ID.

Without identification, he was taken to the police station.

Despite his boss and roommate presenting his ID, the police refused to release him.

He was placed in a detention center for vagrants, where he was fatally beaten by other inmates.

The young man was from a rural area.

His parents had worked hard to fund his education, and his younger brother dropped out of school to help support his college studies.

He studied art in college and became a talented artist.

He had landed his dream job and had been in the city for just 20 days.

He was his family's only hope and source of pride.

His father was devastated to see his son's body, having been falsely informed he died of a heart attack.

With legal help, the young man's death was publicized in the media.

The public outcry drew attention from legal experts and high-ranking officials, leading to a thorough investigation.

Those responsible were convicted and punished.

Importantly, the law allowing police to detain pedestrians was abolished.

His sacrifice led to the closure of many detention centers, ensuring others won't suffer the same fate, especially migrant workers from rural areas.
