Ninth grade rewrite The Boy and the Bank Officer 【1】I have a friend who particularly dislikes banks. He says, "A bank is similar to a store, like a candy store or a grocery store. The only difference is that a bank's products are money, which is yours to start with. If banks had to sell wallets and money belts, they might act less like churches." 【2】I thought about my friend the other day when I went to a small, brightly lit branch office on the West Side. I was there to open a checking account. 【3】It was lunchtime, and the only officer on duty was a man in his forties with short, neat hair, a pencil mustache, and a well-pressed brown suit. He looked very professional. 【4】Across from him was a young boy wearing a V-neck sweater, khakis, and loafers. He had sandy hair and looked more like a prep school student than a typical bank customer. The boy caught my attention because of what happened next. 【5】He was holding an open savings account book and looked very upset. "I don't understand," he said to the officer. "I opened the account myself, so why can't I take out any money?" 【6】The officer explained that a fourteen-year-old can't withdraw money without a letter from their parents. The boy said, "But that doesn't seem fair. It's my money. I put it in. It's my account." 【7】The officer said, "I know it's yours, but those are the rules. Now, if you'll excuse me." He turned to me with a smile. "May I help you, sir?" 【8】I said, "I was going to open a new account, but after seeing this, I've changed my mind." 【9】The officer was surprised. I explained that it seemed unfair that the boy could put money in but not take it out. The officer said, "It may seem ridiculous to you, but that's the bank's policy, and I have to follow it." 【10】The boy stood next to me, looking hopeful, but I was just as confused. I noticed his savings book had about $100 and some small deposits and withdrawals. I asked the boy if he had ever withdrawn money by himself, and he said yes. 【11】I asked the officer why the boy could withdraw money before but not now. The officer said the tellers didn't know the boy's age before, but now they did. I told the boy he was being cheated and should get his parents to come and protest. 【12】The boy looked devastated and left the bank. The officer said I shouldn't have interfered. I was surprised and asked who was representing the boy's interests. The officer said, "The bank." 【13】I couldn't believe it. I asked the officer to explain how the bank was representing the boy's interests. The officer said they found out that a bully had been forcing the boy to take out money every week and give it to him. The boy was too scared to tell anyone. The police are looking into it and might make an arrest today. 【14】I asked if there was really a rule about being too young to withdraw money. The officer said he had never heard of such a rule. Then he asked if he could help me with anything else. |
