The Unfailing Kindness of Strangers

1In the summer of 1994, I decided to take a big adventure. I wanted to travel across the United States, from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean, without any money in my pocket. This was a special test to see how kind people could be and if they would help a traveler like me.

2I started my journey on September 6th with a big backpack and a sign that said "America." I planned to hitchhike, which means I would ask people for rides. I wanted to see if people would give me food and a place to stay, just because they wanted to help.

3Before I started, I knew it could be risky. Stories about bad things happening were everywhere. But I wanted to find out if people were still kind and generous, like they used to be.

4On my first day, I saw a young man with a gas can, trying to hitchhike. I drove past him, and I felt bad about it. It made me think about how we can forget to help others. I wondered if anyone still stopped to help.

5After traveling for a while, I met two nice ladies in Nebraska. They picked me up even though they knew it could be dangerous. They said they didn't want to leave anyone alone on the road. This showed me that people still care about others.

6One day, it was raining, and a truck driver stopped for me. He had been robbed by a hitchhiker before, but he didn't want to see me standing in the rain. He said, "People don't have no heart anymore," but he was wrong. He showed that he had a big heart.

7In Oregon, a man named Mike gave me a warm jacket. In Tennessee, a family invited me to stay at their house. They cooked a nice meal for me. They told me they didn't usually have guests, so it was special that they invited me.

8The next day, I talked to a school class about my trip. The students asked lots of questions. They wanted to know where people were the kindest and if I was scared. I told them that I was proud to live in a country where people still help each other.

9When I finished my trip in North Carolina, I knew that my faith in America was stronger than ever. I learned that people are still kind and willing to help strangers. This trip showed me that even in a world that can be scary, there is still a lot of goodness in people's hearts.
