Christmas Day in the Morning

1Once upon a time, a man awoke at the same hour as he had in his youth, when his father would call him to help with the morning milking. Even though his father had passed away three decades ago, the man still woke at four in the morning. But on this Christmas morning, he chose to stay awake, feeling the magic of the holiday despite his children having grown and left home.

2His wife, Alice, had suggested that perhaps decorating the Christmas tree wasn't worth the effort for just the two of them. He had disagreed, saying that even with just the two of them, they should celebrate Christmas. They had decided to put off decorating the tree until the next day because Alice was tired.

3The man lay in his bed, separated from Alice's room by a closed door. They had chosen separate rooms due to their light sleep, but their long marriage meant they were still close. He wondered why he felt so alert on this clear, starry night, with no moon, but the stars shining brightly.

4He reminisced about his youth on his father's farm. He had overheard his father expressing reluctance to wake him up for the morning milking, showing his love. This realization had made him eager to help and show his appreciation.

5The man recalled the excitement of Christmas as a teenager, with the anticipation of the turkey they raised and the mince pies his mother made. His sisters would sew gifts, and his parents would buy him something he needed, like a warm jacket or a book. He would save to buy them gifts too.

6He wished he could have given his father a better gift than the usual tie from the store. He remembered asking his father what a stable was and learned it was like their barn. He thought about surprising his father by finishing the milking early in the barn.

7He woke up early, careful not to make noise, and went to the barn. The cows were surprised to see him so early, but he managed to milk them and finish the task. He then went back to his room, just in time to hear his father get up.

8His father was surprised to find the milking already done and hugged him, thanking him for the thoughtful gift. The man felt a surge of love and pride, realizing that love was the greatest gift of all.

9Now, as he lay in bed, he thought about his wife. He wanted to express his love to her, so he decided to write her a letter. He went to his desk and began writing, "My dearest love..." He finished the letter, placed it on the tree, and went back to bed, feeling content as the first light of dawn appeared.

10This story shows that love is the most important thing in life. It can be passed down through generations, and on this Christmas morning, the man was ready to share that love with his wife.
