Ninth grade rewrite The Greatest Invention 【1】In a club, a group of friends gathered around Jorkens, who was known for his fascinating stories. One of them asked, "Jorkens, what do you think the future holds?" Jorkens replied, "Predicting the future is difficult. In the past, we could guess what other nations aimed to do and their capabilities. But now, with so many unknown inventions, it's hard to know what any country might do next." 【2】Jorkens shared an experience from his time on a ship in the tropics. He had grown tired of the sea and decided to explore a port. In a tavern, he met a man with a black mustache who seemed to have intriguing stories. Jorkens offered him a glass of wine, and as they drank, the man began to speak. 【3】The man told Jorkens about his country's ambition to control the Caribbean. He explained that warfare had changed and was no longer just about armies but about the intelligence of scientists. They had a scientist named Silvary Carasierra who was unmatched in his brilliance. 【4】The man continued, "Our Minister of Warfare was stuck in old ways and couldn't grasp the potential of modern science. We had to remove him to pursue our rightful ambitions." He then revealed their plan to use a deadly germ to dominate the Caribbean. But Carasierra, driven by his ambition, had a new idea that took him away from their original plan. 【5】Jorkens asked what Carasierra's new idea was. The man explained that Carasierra had created an artificial blade of grass, which he considered his greatest invention. Jorkens was amazed but also reminded the man of their goal to control the Caribbean. The man laughed and said that creating life was more wonderful than any conquest. 【6】Jorkens examined the blade of grass and was shown the process in Carasierra's laboratory. The blade was perfect and alive, but it was artificial. The man was proud of Carasierra's work but also saddened by the loss of their dream. 【7】Jorkens concluded his story, and the man fell into silence, seemingly lost in thoughts of the past and the opportunities his country had missed. |
