Ninth grade rewrite Another School Year—What For? 【1】Imagine you're a new teacher, just starting your first semester at a university. It's 1940, and you're excited but also a bit nervous. One of your students, a tall, skinny guy, comes into your class and sits down. He looks at you like he's ready to learn. Two weeks later, you start reading a famous play called "Hamlet." Three weeks after that, the student comes to your office, hands on his hips, and asks, "Why do I need to read this? I'm here to become a pharmacist." 【2】You could have told him that he's in a university, not just a pharmacy school. You could have explained that his degree will say he's a Bachelor of Science, not just a pill-grinder. But you could tell he wasn't going to stay long enough to care. 【3】Still, you felt it was your duty to try to explain. You told him, "Your life will be about 24 hours long each day. You'll spend about eight hours sleeping. Then, hopefully, you'll spend another eight hours doing your job. You'll be using your skills to make sure everything is safe and right. This is important, and it will help you support your family." 【4】"But what about the rest of your day? What will you do with those eight hours? Will you read books, listen to music, or look at art? These things can make your life richer and more interesting." 【5】The student wasn't interested. He said, "I'm here to make money." You wished him luck, thinking he might feel bored when he wasn't working. 【6】Now, fourteen years later, you're still teaching. You believe college is not just about training for a job. It's about learning from the best minds in history. If you don't care about learning about philosophy, art, history, or science, then college might not be for you. 【7】You can't become a well-rounded person on your own. There's not enough time in life to learn everything you need to know. For example, if you want to be a scientist, you'll learn from those who came before you. Books are like gifts that let you experience many lives and worlds without having to live them all yourself. 【8】A college education is about more than just getting a job. It's about becoming a better person and a good citizen. It's about learning from the past and preparing for the future. So, if you're not interested in learning about the world and how it works, you might miss out on what college has to offer. |
