摘要: .

Welcome to aehelp.com IELTS test preparation videos. You will now see Alex from China get a band 7.5 for her speaking interview. After the interview, I will explain her band score according to IELTS marking criteria: fluency and coherence, grammatical range and accuracy, lexical resource, and pronunciation. Now watch and learn.

Welcome to the speaking portion of the IELTS exam. My name is Adrian. I will be your examiner for this part of the test. What is your full name?

My full name is John Lee, as you may see on my passport, but please refer to me by my English nickname, Alex.

Okay, Alex. The speaking has three parts. I will give you instructions for each, and I will record this for marking purposes. May I see your identification?

Yeah, sure. Here you are.

Thank you. Okay, here is your passport back.

Thank you.

For part one, I will ask you a couple of questions to get to know you better and some questions on a general topic. What did you do this morning?

Uh, this morning I woke up at 6:00 AM and did a big stretching, and I had a very healthy breakfast. Then I just prepared for the interview today.

What do you plan to do on the weekend?

On Saturday, I want to go shopping because I'm looking for a new camera, and on Sunday, I plan to watch movies with my cousin.

Let's talk about helping people. How often do you get help from others?

I should say I get help from others quite often, like from my parents and from my friends, or even from peers or strangers. I get help quite often.

What do you usually need help with?

I think mostly I need help with managing my time, I mean for the chores or homework, so that I can complete all my home and school responsibilities.

When is it important to ask for help?

I suppose when people need help, like most times when there is a sudden danger for our health or just the job is too big for one person. Like last weekend, my dad asked me to paint our fence, and then I just asked one of my friends to come over and help me out.

Have you helped someone recently? If yes, how?

Oh yeah, definitely I have. It's like last evening, my younger brother, he was stuck on a very complex mathematical formula, and I just lent him a hand and explained it to him in detail.

If you need assistance during work or school, who do you ask for help?

Most times, I will ask my friend, Wang Feng, to help me out. Not only is he rather willing to help, but also he's an honor student, so he's capable most of the time. Like last week, he really came through when I was stuck on a long economics analysis.

That's the end of part one. Now we will continue with part two. For part two, here's a card, some note paper, and a pencil. Please don't turn over the card just yet. You will have one minute to look at the questions on the card. Then you will have two minutes to speak. In the one minute, you can take notes if you wish. I will tell you when to start and when to stop.

Okay, all right, your one-minute preparation time begins now. Go ahead and turn over the card. Alex, your one-minute preparation time is up. Please begin speaking.

Uh, it's like about a half a year ago, I just ordered a replica pair of Air Jordan 1 Original from 1985. It was released the first time, then it was reintroduced to the customers as a retro replica. So the color fade is white, white and black. Because I'm quite into basketball and collecting shoes, I really wanted it as part of my collection. So I found this 2003 reproduction on eBay, and I just won the bid and got them in the mail about three weeks later. It cost me 120 bucks. Just to be honest, if an original 1985 pair of AJ is going to cost me a small fortune in good condition, just simply I didn't have that amount of cash back at that moment. Also, I don't want them as a novelty item to put on display, but to wear them as well. So that's the reason I really like my 2003 reproduction. I put them on several times after I got them for indoor hoops only, and it felt great to wear the same shoes which started from the famous love of sport footwear. Otherwise, I don't put them on quite often as I want to keep them in as good condition as possible. To be honest, I think my 2003 reproduction is similar to the 1985, but not exactly the same. There are noticeable differences, but it needs a keen eye to notice this. For example, it's like the holes on the nose, the shapes of the design, and also the serial number on the inside. Even though they are not the real deal, but I really like them.

Okay, Alex, I'm going to stop you there. Your two minutes is up. Please pass back the note paper, the pencil, and the questions.

Yes, thank you.

And now we will continue with part three. For part three, I will ask you some more questions related to the topic of part two. Let's talk about counterfeit products. What are the most common types of merchandise that companies copy these days?

Uh, aside from clothing like AJs I talked about before, I think many companies, they do the knockoff like electronic products, for example, iPhones.

Why do these companies do this?

I think mostly because they do it for the easy profit. They use the popularity of these existing products, and then they can avoid the cost of advertising. Also, those products are mainly made of cheaper materials, which means they can bring companies a greater profit margin.

Where are places that people often buy counterfeit products?

Uh, I think it's like they can either buy online or the resale shops, because it's easier for the buyers to get those products from the unofficial resellers. It's like what I was doing on eBay to get my reproduction 2003 AJs, but I knew what I was getting myself into.

How can people avoid being tricked into buying fake products?

Uh, I suppose there are several ways for people to check it. First, they can check directly from the manufacturers, and then they can review the customer reviews on the website. Last but not least, they can also check the serial number on the product to see if it's genuine.

How has technology helped customers know product authenticity?

I think the most ways I mentioned before are more thanks to modern technology advancement. Also, now people can use online customer reviews and check the product, and they can use the camera functions on their smartphone to scan QR codes to check the information of the product.

Does this always help?

Yeah, it helps most times, but sometimes it's like the distributors and manufacturers in the black market try to overcome the obstacles and put up false reviews.

Let's talk about copyright protection. It is common for people and companies to copy and use others' creations like literature and video for their own benefit. Why do they do this?

I think the motivation for individuals and organizations to copy others is fame or money, or both. Instead of the authentic and honorable way, they choose the easier but unethical way to copy others and put it off as their own.

Why is this harmful to the creator and to society?

Because it definitely harms others' own ideas and also discourages people from being creative. Such actions could bring very serious harm. For example, if a

student gets a degree as a doctor by copying others, but in reality, he doesn't know how to heal patients.

What kinds of consequences do schools and businesses implement for plagiarism?

As far as I know, there is a blacklist database shared among most of the schools in the world. It's like a name list of the students who are caught by copyright infringement. If a student, his or her name is on that list, and if he or she applies for university, then the university simply won't take him or her as a student. Also, I know for people who cheat on the IELTS, their name will also be on that list.

Are these effective to dissuade people from doing this?

Yeah, I think so, but there will always be exceptions.

Okay, that is the end of part three. That concludes this part of the IELTS exam. You will have your mark in about two weeks' time, Alex, with the other sections. Remember to take your passport with you. Have a great rest of your day.

Thank you.

Bye.

Bye.

Here is the breakdown of Alex's 7.5 according to the IELTS speaking interview marking criteria, which is based on coherence and fluency, grammatical range and accuracy, lexical resource, and pronunciation.

Firstly, her coherence and fluency score is about a 7.5. This is the most important score for the final result. Lexical resource, grammatical range, and pronunciation all have a great effect on the coherence and fluency scores. The reason Alex gets 7.5 for fluency and coherence is because her answers are clear for the most part. She's able to answer all of the questions with a fair amount of detail, giving explanations and examples. However, when you pay close attention, especially in part three, you do notice that Alex at times gets stuck searching for the right word or the right grammar. You can see this especially when she makes a grammatical mistake or she doesn't quite find the best word to express herself in the situation. This lowers her band score from a 9 to a 7.5 for fluency and also for coherence because at times it's slightly difficult to understand exactly what she is trying to say.

Let's talk a little bit more about grammatical range and lexical resource. For grammatical range, Alex would be scored about seven. She does use a wide range of grammar in all parts of the interview, including continuous forms, past tense, present perfect, conditionals. However, she makes a fair amount of mistakes with her grammar, so her grammatical range is quite high, but her accuracy in comparison is lower. It's important to balance these two. Make sure to learn and use a variety of grammar forms in your speaking and also make sure to use them accurately. If you watch this interview again, you will note the various forms of grammar used by Alex, and you will also catch some of these mistakes.

As for lexical resource, which is vocabulary, Alex does a great job. She would be scored about an eight. Notice that she uses a lot of fantastic paraphrasing for the words in the questions. Instead of saying "knock-off" in part two, she uses the words "replica," "reproduction," "counterfeit." So clearly, Alex doesn't know only one way but knows several ways to express an idea. This is what a person needs to do to reach those high band scores. In addition, she uses some natural expressions and idiomatic language throughout her speaking, and a lot of it quite quickly. However, at times she does get stuck searching for the right word, but overall it's clear that Alex knows many words in the English language.

Now let's talk a little bit about pronunciation. Arguably, the lowest score for Alex among these marking criteria is for pronunciation. Her pronunciation would be a 6.5. The reason for this is there are several words which Alex says that are difficult to understand on their own. For example, she says, "I would like to see." What she intends to say here is, "I would like to say." Now, of course, these are two very different words. When they're mispronounced in this sense, pronunciation scores are affected, especially when the mispronounced word is misleading and affects the coherence score negatively. You can see several other examples of this throughout her speaking, so her pronunciation is not in balance with her other scores. This is what Alex should work hard to improve. You can improve pronunciation through practicing phonetics and copying native speakers. I have included a couple of useful websites in the video description for you to improve your pronunciation. Pronunciation is not particularly important in the speaking interview. Even if you have a thick accent, it's okay as long as the examiner can clearly understand each word that you're saying. Problems start when the words are incomprehensible or when they sound like different words. You must avoid this.

欢迎来到aehelp.com的雅思考试准备视频。你将看到来自中国的Alex在她的口语面试中获得7.5分。面试结束后,我将根据雅思评分标准解释她的分数,包括流利度和连贯性、语法范围和准确性、词汇资源和发音。现在请观看并学习。

欢迎参加雅思考试的口语部分。我的名字是Adrian,我将是你这部分测试的考官。请问你的全名是什么?

我的全名是John Lee,你可以在我的护照上看到,但请称呼我为我的英文昵称Alex
