The Man in Asbestos

1In a small town, there lived a man who was fascinated by stories of the future. He often read about people who could sleep for hundreds of years and wake up in a world that was completely different from his own. He longed to experience such a journey himself. One day, he decided to take a leap into the unknown and embarked on a journey through time.

2He prepared himself for a deep, long sleep, a sleep that would take him centuries into the future. He lay down, closed his eyes, and let himself drift into a slumber that felt like it would never end. As he slept, he could sense the passage of time, the days turning into years, and the years into centuries. Then, suddenly, he awoke.

3He found himself in a place he did not recognize. He was sitting on a wide couch in a room that looked like a museum. Beside him was a man with a face that was neither young nor old, and he was dressed in clothes that seemed to be made of grey dust. The man looked at him with a calm expression, showing neither surprise nor interest.

4The time traveler, filled with excitement and curiosity, asked, "Where am I? Who are you?"

The man in grey dust replied, "You speak in a strange, excited way. I don't know where you are, and I don't know who you are. We don't keep track of years anymore."

The time traveler was shocked. "You don't keep track of years? Why not?"

5The man explained, "We've conquered death and hunger. We don't need to count the years because they no longer matter."

The time traveler was amazed. He had always believed that the future would be full of progress and wonder. But this new world seemed lifeless and dull. He asked, "What are your clothes made of?"

6"Asbestos," the man replied.

The time traveler was puzzled. "Asbestos? Why would you wear that?"

The man in grey dust shrugged. "It's all we have left. We don't need much anymore."

7The time traveler decided to explore this strange new world. He left the museum and stepped out onto the street. What he saw was a shock. The once bustling city was now a silent, overgrown ruin. The buildings were crumbling, and there was no sign of life. The only people he saw were dressed in the same grey clothes, walking slowly and without purpose.

8He asked the man, "Where are the cars and buses? Where is everyone?"

The man replied, "We don't need them anymore. We don't go anywhere. We don't work. We don't have to."

The time traveler was confused. "But how do you live? What do you do all day?"

The man in grey dust said, "We don't do anything. We just exist."

9The time traveler couldn't believe what he was hearing. He had always thought that the future would be full of adventure and discovery. But this future was a world without work, without challenges, and without purpose. He felt a deep sadness for the people who lived in this world.

10He asked, "Do you have any newspapers or books?"

The man shook his head. "No, we don't need them. There's nothing to write about. No news, no stories, no history."

11The time traveler realized that in this future, everything that made life interesting and meaningful had been lost. He thought about his own time, with its struggles and its joys, and he knew that he preferred it to this lifeless world.

12He turned to the man and said, "I want to go back to my own time. I want to live in a world where there is work to do, where there are stories to tell, and where there is love to share."

13Suddenly, the time traveler woke up in his own bed. He realized that it had all been a dream. He was back in his own time, with all its problems and all its beauty. He was grateful for the life he had, with its challenges and its rewards. He knew that the future was not a place to escape to, but a place to create, one day at a time.
