Diogenes and Alexander

Gilbert Highet

1In the ancient city of Corinth, a philosopher named Diogenes lived a life that was as extraordinary as it was simple. He was a man who rejected the conventional luxuries and societal norms of his time, choosing instead to live in a manner that was closer to nature.

2Diogenes believed that true happiness and freedom were not found in material possessions or social status, but in living a life that was true to one's own nature and principles.

3Diogenes' home was not a grand palace or a comfortable villa, but a large earthenware jar, which he found discarded in the marketplace. This jar, which he called his "home," was a symbol of his rejection of the materialistic values that many in Corinth held dear. He believed that people should live in harmony with nature and that true happiness came from within, not from external possessions or status.

4Diogenes spent his days in the marketplace of Corinth, engaging in lively debates with passersby, challenging their beliefs and values. He would also perform simple tasks, such as eating and sleeping, in public, to demonstrate that there was no shame in living naturally. Diogenes believed that people should live in harmony with nature and that true happiness came from within, not from external possessions or status.

5One day, a young and ambitious king named Alexander the Great, who had already conquered much of the known world, visited Corinth. He had heard of Diogenes' unconventional lifestyle and was curious to meet him. When Alexander found Diogenes lying in the sun, he asked if there was anything he could do for him. Diogenes, without hesitation, replied, "Yes, you can move aside because you're blocking the sunlight."

6Alexander was taken aback by Diogenes' directness and his simple request. He realized that Diogenes was a man of great wisdom and integrity, someone who valued freedom and simplicity above all else. Alexander respected Diogenes for his courage to live according to his principles, even in the face of societal norms and expectations.

7Diogenes and Alexander, though vastly different in their positions and lifestyles, shared a common understanding of freedom. For Alexander, freedom meant the ability to conquer and rule, to shape the world according to his vision.

8For Diogenes, freedom was the ability to live without the constraints of society, to be true to oneself and to live in harmony with nature. Both men sought freedom in their own ways, and both found it in their lives. Diogenes' life and teachings continue to inspire people.
