Groundless Beliefs

1In the future, we will start to sort out what we believe in by asking how we know it's true. We'll look at every statement and wonder, "How do we know that? What makes us believe it? What is the reason behind it?" We might be surprised at how many things we say every day that we can't really prove. They might just be based on old stories or someone's word without any proof...

2Sometimes, we believe things because we were told them when we were young and didn't question them. Maybe someone told us something when we were little, and we just accepted it without thinking. Many of our strongest beliefs were formed when we were kids, and now it's hard to even think about questioning them.

3They seem so obvious to us. But if two babies were swapped at birth and raised in different places with different beliefs, they would probably grow up believing the opposite of what they believe now.

4This is true for many beliefs, not just religious ones. If we grew up in a place where things like having more than one wife, hunting heads, or fighting in an arena were normal, we would think they were okay. If an English baby was raised in Germany and didn't know he was English, he would have German thoughts and beliefs, not English ones. Many of our beliefs are just because we were raised with them.

5Even as adults, we still believe things on just a suggestion. We do it without really thinking, like how newspapers and ads can influence us. We often just repeat ideas we've heard without questioning them. Most people are like parrots, repeating what they hear.

6We should be careful with beliefs that everyone says are true. These are often old beliefs passed down from generation to generation. But just because something is old doesn't mean it's right. We need to be careful with beliefs that seem too obvious to question. Throughout history, many "obvious truths" have been proven wrong when we learned more.

7For example, for a long time, people thought slavery was natural and right. They thought some people were "slaves by nature." It was hard to even think about questioning it. Planets moving in circles was also thought to be true for a long time. It took a lot of smart people to change that idea.

8We used to think the heart was where we think, not the brain. And for a long time, people thought the Earth was flat. It was hard to imagine it any other way. Heavy things falling faster than light ones was also a belief for a long time. It took Galileo to show that wasn't true.

9Some beliefs are held because they are useful to us. We might not realize it, but we hold onto some beliefs because they help us in some way. But it's not right to think all opinions are like this. It's also not right to say self-interest isn't a reason for some beliefs.

10We should be careful when our happiness depends on us believing something. If we might lose something by changing our mind, we should think twice. We might hold onto a belief because it makes us feel good about ourselves or our choices.

11Many beliefs are based on feelings. We might believe something because it reminds us of someone we like or dislike. If we didn't get along with our dad, we might not like his opinions. If we liked our mom, we might like her opinions.

12Sometimes, our beliefs are just what's popular. We might think something is good because everyone else does. But we don't always change our beliefs with every new trend. Sometimes, we hold onto beliefs because they were popular a long time ago.

13Once we believe something, it's hard to change our minds. Our brains get used to thinking a certain way, and it's hard to change. We might have a list of stories we tell over and over, or opinions we repeat without thinking. As we get older, it's harder to accept new ideas that don't fit with what we already think.

14So, even though there are many reasons we believe things that aren't based on facts, there are some people who really want to find out the truth, no matter what it is. They want to think clearly and rationally. For them, this is written.
