As dead as a dodo

Are you looking at me? Do you know who I am? I’m a dodo! You might think I’m just a character from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. But actually, there used to be thousands of us—really. Now, you can only see us in museums.

We lived on an island in the Indian Ocean. In the old days, there was lots of food to eat, and all the other animals were friendly. It was a peaceful and safe life!

But in 1598, humans arrived. They cut down the trees, and our lovely forest disappeared. They hunted us because we were slow and couldn’t fly. Plus, their pigs, cats, and dogs ate our eggs. Because of this, we soon became extinct.

Now, we are displayed in museums around the world. When you see us, please remember our sad story. The world has many amazing animals. Please do your best to help them. Make them as happy as a clam, not as dead as a dodo.
