For Bird Week at school, we’re learning
about different types of birds. While some of my classmates got to write about
penguins, I drew the short straw and have to write about pigeons. I’m observing pigeons at the park right
now. They seem to just wander around all morning, leaving droppings everywhere.
I used to think pigeons were dull and dirty. A girl is feeding them, and suddenly the
birds are flocking around her wildly. It’s a bit intimidating! I decided to do some research online. It
turns out that pigeons can recognize themselves in mirrors. That’s pretty
impressive! Maybe pigeons are smarter than I thought. I’ll need to take another
look at them. So, I’m back at the park. Oh, look at that
pigeon staring at its reflection in the water! Maybe I was wrong about pigeons
after all. Now, I’m reading in the library and find
out there are over 200 different types of pigeons. Some of them can fly
thousands of kilometers without getting lost and can reach speeds of over 100
km per hour—that’s as fast as my dad’s car! So, it turns out pigeons aren’t boring or
scary. They are actually fascinating! I just didn’t know enough about them
before. |
