The First Lesson

Our English teacher, Ms. Chen, wrote a sentence on the blackboard. It said, "Learning without thinking is of no use." She told us, "Please write this down."

Everyone started writing. I wrote the first word and then stopped. "That's not right," I thought. "But is it OK to point out the mistake? Is that polite in the first lesson?" These questions filled my mind.

"Why aren't you writing, Wang Han?" Ms. Chen asked.

I looked up at her. My eyes met hers, and my mouth felt dry. But then I remembered the meaning of the sentence. I raised my hand.

"Ms. Chen, there's a mistake," I said. "That sentence is from Confucius, not from Mencius."

"Well done, Wang Han," Ms. Chen said. "In fact, this is my first lesson for all of you. You are now in junior high school, and learning will be more difficult. It's important to think more in your learning. Please always remember this."

That's really an important lesson!

第一节课

我们的英语老师陈老师在黑板上写下了一句话，并让我们抄写。那句话是：“学而不思则罔，思而不学则殆。”我开始写下第一个词，但停了下来。我在第一天上学就想知道，是否可以指出一个错误。

“王涵，你为什么不写呢？”陈老师问道。

我紧张地抬起头，嘴里干涩。

然后，我思考这句话的意思。我决定举手发言。

“陈老师，有个错误，”我勇敢地说道，“这句话其实是孔子说的，不是孟子。”

“做得好，王涵。”陈老师笑着说道。“这是你们开始初中的重要课程。学习会更有挑战性，因此深思熟虑地学习非常重要。永远记住这一点。”

这真是一堂非常重要的课！
