The First Lesson

"Learning without thinking is of no use." Our English teacher, Ms. Chen, wrote this sentence on the blackboard and said, "Please write this down."

We all started to write. I wrote down the first word and then stopped. "That's not right," I thought. "But is it okay to point out the mistake? Is it polite to do so in the first lesson?" Many questions popped into my mind.

"Why aren't you writing, Wang Han?" Ms. Chen asked. I looked up at her. Our eyes met, and my mouth felt dry. But then I thought about the meaning of the sentence. I raised my hand.

"Ms. Chen, there's a mistake," I said. "That sentence is from Confucius, not from Mencius."

"Well done, Wang Han," Ms. Chen replied. "Actually, this is my first lesson for all of you. You are now in junior high school. Learning will be more difficult. It's important to think more deeply about your learning. Please always remember this."

That was really an important lesson!
