Hasty

1. The swallow has gone, but there will be times when it comes back; the willows have withered, but there will be times when they turn green again; the peach blossoms have fallen, but there will be times when they bloom again.

2. But, clever one, tell me, why do our days go by never to return?

3. — Has someone stolen them: who is it?

4. And where are they hidden?

5. Have they run away by themselves: where are they now?

6. I don't know how many days they have given me; but my hands are indeed gradually becoming empty.

7. Silently counting, more than eight thousand days have slipped away from my hands, like a drop of water on the tip of a needle falling into the sea. My days drip into the flow of time, without a sound, without a shadow.

8. I can't help but feel a heavy heart and tears streaming down.

9. The gone days have gone, the coming days are coming, and in between, how hasty it is!

10. When I get up in the morning, two or three slanted sunbeams shoot into the small room.

11. The sun has feet, it quietly and gently moves; I also follow it unknowingly.

12. So — when washing hands, the days pass through the basin; when eating, the days pass through the bowl; in silence, they pass in front of the still eyes.

13. I noticed its haste, when I reached out to block it, it passed by the blocking hands; at nightfall, when I lie in bed, it swiftly crosses over me, flying away from my feet.

14. When I open my eyes and see the sun again, another day has slipped away.

15. I cover my face and sigh.

16. But the shadow of the new coming day begins to flicker again in the sigh.

17. In the days flying away like this, what can I do in the world with thousands of doors and millions of houses?

18. Only wander, only hastily.

19. In the more than eight thousand days of haste, besides wandering, what is left?

20. The past days are like light smoke, blown away by a breeze, like thin fog, evaporated by the early sun.

21. What traces have I left?

22. What traces have I ever left like floating threads?

23. I came to this world naked, and in the blink of an eye, I will return naked.

24. But why should it be in vain, why must I go through this in vain?

25. Clever one, tell me, why do our days go by never to return?
