Two Classical Chinese Stories
Learning to Play Go
Yi Qiu was the best Go player in the country. He was teaching two people how to play Go. One person focused all his attention and listened to Yi Qiu's instructions. The other person, although listening, was thinking about a swan flying over and wanted to shoot it with a bow. Although they were learning together, the second person did not learn as well as the first. Was it because the second person was not as smart? The answer is no.
Two Children Debate About the Sun
Confucius was traveling east and saw two children arguing. He asked them what they were arguing about. One child said, "I think that when the sun rises, it is close to people, and at noon, it is far away." The other child said, "I think that when the sun rises, it is far from people, and at noon, it is close." One child said, "When the sun rises, it is as big as a cartwheel, and at noon, it is as small as a plate. Doesn't that mean it is farther away when it is small and closer when it is big?" The other child said, "When the sun rises, it is cool and refreshing, and at noon, it is as hot as boiling water. Doesn't that mean it is closer when it is hot and farther when it is cool?" Confucius could not decide who was right. The two children laughed and said, "Who says you are very knowledgeable?" |
