情节开篇 公爵夫人亲热地挽着爱丽丝的胳膊，一起走并交谈。爱丽丝对公爵夫人有这样好的脾气非常高兴，她认为之前在厨房里见到的公爵夫人之所以凶狠，主要是胡椒的缘故。 爱丽丝的联想 爱丽丝自言自语道（口气上不很有把握），要是自己当了公爵夫人，厨房里连一点胡椒都不要。没有胡椒，汤也会做得非常好。 她认为胡椒弄得人们脾气暴躁，醋让人酸溜溜的，黄菊把人们弄得那么涩，以及麦芽糖这类东西把孩子的脾气变得那么甜。 爱丽丝希望人们懂得这些，就不会变得吝啬。 公爵夫人的“教训” 公爵夫人在爱丽丝耳边说话时，爱丽丝吓了一跳，忘记正在谈话。 公爵夫人说每件事都会引出教训，只要能够找出来。 公爵夫人认为爱丽丝在想事情而忘了谈话，虽然她现在不能告诉这件事的教训是什么，但过一会会想起来。 爱丽丝认为也许根本没什么教训，但公爵夫人坚持认为有，并说“爱，爱是推动世界的动力”是这件事的教训之一。 王后的出现与槌球游戏 王后突然出现，交叉着胳膊，脸色阴沉，要求公爵夫人要么滚开，要么把头砍下来滚开，公爵夫人选择了立刻就走。 王后带着爱丽丝回到槌球场，其他客人看到王后都跳起来继续玩槌球。 王后说谁要是耽误一秒钟，就得付出生命的代价。整个游戏进行中，王后不断地同别人吵嘴，嚷着“砍掉他的头”或“砍掉她的头”。 被宣判的人立刻就被士兵带去监禁起来，这样执行命令的士兵就不能再回来做球门。过了约莫半个小时，球场上已经没有一个球门，除了国王、王后和爱丽丝，所有参加槌球游戏的人都被判了砍头并监管起来。 素甲鱼的故事 王后停下来对爱丽丝说，她还没去看素甲鱼。 王后说当然有素甲鱼，因为有素甲鱼汤。于是带着爱丽丝去找素甲鱼。 王后把爱丽丝留在鹰头狮那儿，自己去检查命令执行情况。 鹰头狮告诉爱丽丝，素甲鱼根本没有伤心事，这只是它的想象。 素甲鱼终于开口讲它的故事，说它从前是一只真正的甲鱼，他们小时候都到海里的学校去上学，他们的老师是一只老甲鱼，叫胶鱼。 Opening of the Plot
The Duchess takes Alice's arm affectionately and walks with her, chatting. Alice is delighted that the Duchess is in such a good mood, attributing her previous凶狠 demeanor in the kitchen to the pepper. Alice's Associations
Alice murmurs to herself (not very confidently) that if she were the Duchess, there would be no pepper in the kitchen at all. Without pepper, the soup would be excellent.
She believes that pepper makes people irritable, vinegar makes them sour, chrysanthemum makes them astringent, and malt sugar makes children's tempers so sweet.
Alice hopes that if people understand these things, they won't be mean. The Duchess's "Lesson"
When the Duchess whispers in Alice's ear, Alice jumps, forgetting their conversation.
The Duchess says that everything leads to a lesson, if one can only find it.
The Duchess thinks Alice was thinking and forgot to talk, although she can't tell what the lesson of the matter is now, but she'll think of it later.
Alice thinks there might not be a lesson at all, but the Duchess insists there is and says that "love, love is the motive power of the world" is one of the lessons of the matter. The Queen's Appearance and Croquet Game
The Queen suddenly appears, crossing her arms and looking glum, demanding that the Duchess either get out or have her head cut off and rolled out. The Duchess chooses to leave immediately.
The Queen takes Alice back to the croquet ground, where the other guests jump up and continue playing croquet upon seeing the Queen.
The Queen says that anyone who delays for a second will pay with their life. Throughout the game, the Queen constantly argues with others, shouting "off with his head" or "off with her head."
Those sentenced are immediately taken away by soldiers to be imprisoned, so the soldiers executing the orders cannot return to serve as goals. After about half an hour, there are no goals left on the field except for the King, the Queen, and Alice. All the participants in the croquet game have been sentenced to have their heads cut off and imprisoned. The Mock Turtle's Story
The Queen stops and tells Alice that she hasn't seen the Mock Turtle yet.
The Queen says there's certainly a Mock Turtle because there's Mock Turtle Soup. So, she takes Alice to find the Mock Turtle.
The Queen leaves Alice with the Gryphon to check on the execution of her orders.
The Gryphon tells Alice that the Mock Turtle has no real sorrows; it's just imagining them.
Finally, the Mock Turtle begins to tell its story, saying that it was once a real turtle and that they all went to school in the sea when they were young. Their teacher was an old turtle called the Tortoise. |
