Chapter 8 The Brown Hen Part 1
A 1.George stood in the farmyard looking up at the roof. 2.The old farmhouse had a fine roof of pale red tiles and tall chimneys. 3.There was no sign of Grandma. 4.There was only a song-thrush sitting on one of the chimney-pots, singing a song.
B 1.The old wurzel's got stuck in the attic, George thought. 2.Thank goodness for that. 3.Suddenly a tile came clattering down from the roof and fell into the yard. 4.The song-thrush took off fast and flew away. 5.Then another tile came down.
C 1.Then half a dozen more. 2.And then, very slowly, like some weird monster rising up from the deep, Grandma's head came through the roof .. 3.Then her scrawny neck . And the tops of her shoulders . D 1.'How'm I doing, boy!' she shouted. 2.'How's that for a bash up?'' Don't you think you'd better stop now, Grandma?' George called out .. 3.'I have stopped!' she answered. 4. 'I feel terrific! Didn't I tell you I had magic powers! 5.Didn't I warn you I had wizardry in the tips of my fingers!
E 1.But you wouldn't listen to me, would you? 2.You wouldn't listen to your old Grandma!' 'You didn't do it, Grandma,' George shouted back to her. 3.'I did it! I made you a new medicine!' 'A new medicine? You? What rubbish!' she yelled.
F 1.'I did! I did!' George shouted. 2.'You're lying as usual!' Grandma yelled. 3. 'You're always lying!' 'I'm not lying, Grandma. 4. I swear I'm not. 5.'The wrinkled old face high up on the roof stared down suspiciously at George.
G 1.'Are you telling me you actually made a new medicine all by yourself?' she shouted. 2.'Yes, Grandma, all by myself. 3.''I don't believe you,' she answered. 4.'But I'm very comfortable up here. 5.Fetch me a cup of tea.
H 1.'A brown hen was pecking about in the yard close to where George was standing. 2.The hen gave him an idea. 3.Quickly, he uncorked the medicine bottle and poured some of the brown stuff into the spoon. 4.'Watch this, Grandma!' he shouted. 5.He crouched down, holding out the spoon to the hen.
I 1.'Chicken,' he said.'Chick-chick-chicken. Come here. Have some of this. 2.'Chickens are stupid birds, and very greedy. 3.They think everything is food. 4. This one thought the spoon was full of corn. 5. It hopped over. 6.It put its head on one side and looked at the spoon. |
