LESSON NINE The little match-seller A 1.It was the last evening of the year. 2.The weather was cold and snow was falling fast. 3.A poor little girl was roaming through the streets. 4.She had bare head and naked feet. 5.Her feet were red and blue with cold. 6.Her pair of big slippers was lost when she was trying to avoid two fast carriages. 7.The little girl wore an old apron. 8.In its pocket were many matches. 9.She hadn’t eaten any thing the whole day. 10.She could not go home, for she hadn’t sold any matches. 11.Her father would certainly beat her. 12.Besides, her home was as cold as here. B 1.She sat down in a corner. 2.Her little hands were almost frozen with cold. 3.Ah! Perhaps burning a match might be some good. 4.She drew one out-"scratch! " 5.It gave a warm, bright light, like a little candle. 6.The little girl felt she was sitting by a large stove. 7.The stove seemed so warm. 8.She stretched out her feet, when the flame went out. 9.She rubbed another match on the wall. 10.The light fell upon the wall, and she could see into the room. 11.A steaming roast goose was placed on the table. 12.The goose jumped down from the disk and waddled to the little girl. 13.Then the match went out. 14.She lighted another match. 15.She found herself sitting under a beautiful Christmas-tree. 16.The little girl stretched out her hands, but the match went out again. 17.Then she saw a star fall. C 1. "Someone is dying, " thought the little girl. 2.Her old grandmother had told her that when a star falls, a soul is going up to God. 3.She again rubbed a match. 4.This time, her old grandmother was standing in the brightness. 5. "Grandmother, " cried the little girl, "take me with you! " 6.She made haste to light the whole bundle of matches. 7.She wished to keep her grandmother there. 8.Her grandmother took her in the arms. 9.They both flew upwards to the heaven. 10.There was neither cold nor hunger and pain. 11.They were with God. 12.In the morning, the poor little girl lay still on the ground. 13.She had been frozen to death on the last evening of the year. 14.She still held the matches in her hand. 15.No one could imagine the beautiful things she had seen. |
