Sixth grade rewrite The Boy and the Bank Officer 【1】I have a friend who really doesn't like banks. He says, "A bank is just like a store, but instead of selling candy or groceries, it sells money, which is yours to begin with. If banks had to sell wallets and money belts, they might not act so much like churches." 【2】The other day, I went to a small bank to open a checking account. It was lunchtime, and there was only one officer on duty. He was a man in his forties, with neat hair and a brown suit. He looked very professional. 【3】There was also a young boy there, who looked like he was from a good school, not a typical customer at this bank. He was holding a savings book and looked very upset. "I don't understand," he said to the officer. "I opened the account myself, so why can't I take out my money?" 【4】The officer explained that a fourteen-year-old can't withdraw money without a letter from their parents. The boy said, "But that's not fair. It's my money, I put it in, it's my account." 【5】The officer said, "I know, but those are the rules. Now, can I help you?" I said, "I was going to open a new account, but after seeing this, I've changed my mind." 【6】The officer was surprised. I explained that it seemed unfair that the boy could put money in but not take it out. The officer said, "That's the bank's policy, and I have to follow it." 【7】The boy looked hopeful, but I was just as confused. I noticed his savings book had about $100 and some small deposits and withdrawals. I asked the boy if he had withdrawn money before, and he said yes. 【8】I asked the officer why the boy could withdraw money before but not now. The officer said the tellers didn't know the boy's age before, but now they did. I told the boy he was being cheated and should get his parents to come and protest. 【9】The boy looked sad and left the bank. The officer said I shouldn't have interfered. I was surprised and asked who was representing the boy's interests. The officer said, "The bank." 【10】I couldn't believe it. I asked the officer to explain how the bank was representing the boy's interests. The officer said they found out that a bully had been forcing the boy to take out money every week and give it to him. The boy was too scared to tell anyone. The police are looking into it and might make an arrest today. 【11】I asked if there was really a rule about being too young to withdraw money. The officer said he had never heard of such a rule. Then he asked if he could help me with anything else.
