Love and logic

Part

1Max was pleased to discover that his friend Polly was not entirely lacking in intelligence.   He embarked on a mission to refine her thinking skills, reviewing and reinforcing the logical concepts he had previously taught her.

2This process was akin to chipping away at a mountain, with each effort bringing him closer to his goal.   After five challenging nights, he felt he had succeeded in making Polly a true logician, someone who could think critically and independently.

3Max was confident that Polly's newfound logical prowess made her a suitable partner for him.   He believed that she was now ready to move beyond their academic relationship and into a romantic one.   "Polly," he said one evening, "let's not discuss fallacies tonight.   I want to talk about us."

4Polly, however, was not as eager to change the nature of their relationship.   "Aw, gee," she said, showing her disappointment.

5Max, undeterred, continued, "We've spent five evenings together, and it's clear that we're a good match."   But Polly quickly pointed out that Max's conclusion was based on a hasty generalization, as they had only spent a limited amount of time together.

6Max, trying a different approach, declared his love for Polly, using a grandiose metaphor that compared her to the entire universe.   He hoped this would convince her to be his steady partner.   But Polly, now well-versed in logical fallacies, pointed out that his argument was an appeal to pity, or "ad misericordiam."

7Max, feeling like a character in a Frankenstein story, with his creation turning against him, tried to reason with Polly.   He reminded her that he was the one who had taught her about fallacies.   Polly, however, reminded him that he had taught her to think critically, and she was now applying that skill to their relationship.

8Max, frustrated, accused Petey Bellows, another boy, of being a liar and a cheat.   But Polly, using the fallacy of poisoning the well, pointed out that Max's negative comments about Petey were not a valid reason to reject him.

9In the end, Max realized that love and logic do not always go hand in hand.   He had to accept that Polly's feelings were her own, and that no amount of logical argument could change her heart.

10He learned that love is not something that can be forced or reasoned into existence;   it is a feeling that grows naturally and cannot be controlled by logic alone.
