Story Summary
"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" follows Harry's tumultuous fifth year at Hogwarts. The book begins with Harry being attacked by Dementors and narrowly escaping expulsion after a disciplinary hearing for using magic outside of school. He learns that the Ministry of Magic is denying Voldemort's return, which results in a smear campaign against him and Dumbledore. To combat this, Harry, Hermione, and Ron form "Dumbledore's Army," a secret group to teach their peers defensive spells. The new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Dolores Umbridge, imposes oppressive rules and punishes dissenters cruelly. Harry experiences intense dreams and visions connected to Voldemort, which lead him to a prophecy stating that he is destined to confront the Dark Lord. His relationship with his godfather Sirius Black becomes strained, and ultimately, Sirius is killed during a battle at the Ministry of Magic. The novel ends with the Ministry finally acknowledging Voldemort's return, and Harry mourning the loss of Sirius while determined to continue the fight against evil. The story explores themes of authority, rebellion, and the complexities of adolescence amidst the looming threat of dark forces. |
