Pigeon Surprise During Bird Week at school, we’re learning about different types of birds. Some of my classmates got to write about penguins, but I’m stuck with... pigeons! At the moment, I’m observing pigeons in the park. They seem to just loiter around all morning, scattering droppings everywhere. I initially thought pigeons were both uninteresting and filthy! I saw a girl feeding them, and suddenly, the birds swarmed around her in a frenzy. It was quite unnerving! I decided to do some research online. It turns out pigeons can recognize themselves in mirrors, which is pretty surprising! They seem to be quite intelligent. I figured I should take another look... Back at the park, I saw a pigeon staring at its reflection in a puddle. Maybe I had been too quick to judge pigeons. In the library, I found out there are over 200 different species of pigeons. Some of them can fly thousands of kilometers without getting lost and reach speeds over 100 kilometers per hour—almost as fast as my dad’s car! It turns out pigeons aren’t as dull or frightening as I thought. They are truly fascinating; I just needed to learn more about them! |
