Pigeon Surprise During Bird Week at my school, while some of my classmates enthusiastically chose penguins as their research subject, I found myself observing pigeons in a nearby park. Initially, I viewed pigeons as mundane creatures, often associated with urban messiness due to their droppings scattered everywhere. However, my perspective soon shifted. One morning, as I watched pigeons milling around, I noticed a girl feeding them. Instantly, the birds swarmed around her, their behavior unexpectedly intense and somewhat intimidating. Intrigued by their actions, I decided to delve deeper into pigeon behavior. I discovered that pigeons possess surprising intelligence, such as their ability to recognize themselves in mirrors. This newfound knowledge prompted me to reconsider my initial impression. Returning to the park, I observed a pigeon captivated by its reflection in a puddle, which further intrigued me. Determined to learn more, I visited the library and uncovered fascinating facts: there are over 200 different species of pigeons, some capable of undertaking migratory journeys spanning thousands of kilometers with speeds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour—almost as fast as a car! This research transformed my perception of pigeons. Far from being dull or menacing, they proved to be complex and resilient creatures deserving of admiration. I had underestimated their intelligence and adaptability, but through exploration and study, I developed a newfound appreciation for these remarkable birds. |
