1.One day, a donkey was carrying sacks of salt across a stream. 2.In the middle of the stream, he felt so tired that he sank into the water. 3."That's bad!" The donkey's master said. 4.He worried very much. 5."Now, you see, the salt was washed away by the water,"the master scolded him. 6.The donkey looked unhappy, 7.but in his heart he was very happy, 8.because he did not have to carry the heavy load any longer. 9. The next day, the donkey carried a load to the stream again. 10.He thought, "Yesterday, I sank into the water, then the load became light. 11.I will sink into the water again." 12.So he sank into the water on purpose. 13."The load will be washed away by the water, 14.so I will not have to carry it," he thought. 15.But this time the sacks contained cotton instead of salt. 16.Water got into the cotton and the cotton became much heavier. 17."Well," thought the donkey, 18."I wanted to lighten the load, 19.but now it is much heavier. 20.I should not have done that!"
